Default Guildwars.com Flashy AND Crashy...

(Didn't know where else to put this...)

Has anyone else noticed the GW main site crashing their Internet Explorer (send me more memory if you want to flame )?

If I go to the main site for more than 5 seconds it crashes! It started happening when they updated to the new look a few days ago. It was fine with the previous version, but something in the new flash my IE.

Honestly, I wouldn't think much of it, but it also happens on my girlfriend's computer as well, and we have way different system specs (her comp being faster, newer, with double the memory of mine).

Anyone else getting slightly irritated?

It's an IE thing. Used IE for the first time in ages just to test it. Flash9e.ocx crashed it. "This problem was caused by Flash Player, which was created by Adobe Systems Inc.. Currently, there is no solution for the problem that you reported." So says Windows error reporting.

Seems to be cured by updating FlashPlayer to v9

Download the latest Flash player - http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/downl...ShockwaveFlash

Or, er, get Firefox...

Firefox is certainly the best available windows browser. It's so stable I even use the betas with no misgivings (currently v3b5).

Derrick, have you updated flashplayer? Are you using IE?

Do this, it's by far the better option.

Or even safari now the new version has been released for windows.

As a designer i'm liking how it renders pages myself, the search function is pretty handy too. Only things its missing are the ability to add new sites to the search box and the extensions firefox has.

As a consumer, I'm NOT liking how Apple sneaked Safari in via its auto update software. If they don't face an anti-trust hearing like Microsoft did, names will be taken and asses will be kicked.

As far as i remember i was given the option do downlaod it via a checkbox. Microsoft don't give you a choice with IE.

Ah, you have a point.

I buy a MS OS, I expect to be able to access the internet so it's not unexpected for MS to include a MS browser with a MS OS.

If I buy an Apple OS on the other hand, I expect to be able to ...you catch my drift?

Putting Safari in their auto-update is a no-no. It's an updater for existing software, not a delivery system for new software.

Mark my words, there will be a fuss about this.

(Actually, I don't give a toss - I just love playing devil's advocate, and never was a term more apt )

I'd say the worst part about choice with IE is you just cannot remove it from a system.

Firefox is still the best browser going though and others have along way to go before catching up.

greasemonkey alone opens up so many possibilities for firefox.

Why is that? You consented to install their auto-updater? I won't go into my normal MS or Apple bashing today, instead, I will focus on the dumbass end-user who installs everything they see. If you install an auto-updater for anything other than your anti-virus or anti-*ware you fall into the category of dumbass end-user.

You can remove IE from a Windows box.

Safari is complete rubbish on Windows. Apple in general is getting worse with things they do.

From my testing safari outperforms every other prowser in page rendering speed and IE and opera in rendering quality. The only real issues are its customisablilty and a few security flaws that other browsers had in early stages on the windows platform. Hopefully these will be addressed in future updates as safari's usability features are pretty impressive.

Fair point. Auto-updaters are evil.

Heh, I don't even use quicktime - there are good substitutes out there without the baggage...
